A Digg Article: “Trying to Understand Mental Illness”

2 01 2008

This is an article I discovered on Digg.com which I found to be an excellent piece on mental illness. It was described by the author as: “My discussion on mental illness and the challenges we have as both a society and as someone afflicted with mental illness in seeking health.”

Excellent blog.
I have a 19 year history of eating disorders (6 weeks in recovery) , self harm, depression, anxiety, panic attacks and now agoraphobia.
Eliminating the stigma is a wonderful idea, but there are so many people out there not willing to take a second to just try and understand. I’ve had dealings with mental health care professionals who don’t want to know, i think expecting society to listen is going to be harder than we think. Even within my family, i am STILL told to “Just get over it”, or “It’s all in your head” and my personal favourite “Pull yourself together!”. I’ve been pretty much housebound for nearly 9 years…what do these people think i am suffering with??? A cold?
Anyway, thanks for a good read..
